[composer/performer]Dead Cat Bounce is a collaborative performance work by Gary Zhexi Zhang and Waste Paper Opera, telling tales of time, money and the unmaking of reality in the wake of catastrophe.&#38;nbsp;
In 2022, Dead Cat Bounce was commissioned by Arts Catalyst, with support from Medialab-Matadero. Its development was supported by Wysing Arts Centre and London Performance Studios, and the premiere is being supported by Somerset House Studios.
In 2024, Dead Cat Bounce received support from Arts Council England, Hinrichsen Foundation, Marchus Trust, RADAR, Chol, and Birmingham Opera Company for a UK tour.&#38;nbsp;

Catastrophe Tales was a project delivered by James Oldham and Klara Kofen for Arts Catalysts Young Peoples’s Programme 2024 as part of the Dead Cat Bounce tour. In this project, a new broadcast made by students in Year 13 from King Edward VII School, inspired by ideas connected to Dead Cat Bounce. The project was a satellite element of Dead Cat Bounce and was a collaboration between Arts Catalyst, Yorkshire-based theatre and arts company Chol and experimental theatre collective Waste Paper Opera.  @ Matadero, Madrid – 6th May 2022
This version of Dead Cat Bounce became an durational installation that ran for 30 minutes. Hypothetically, it could run continuously as a loop. The costumes were hanging from the ceiling and uplit, exerpts of the score were on music stands, images from Zhang’s associated research projects were projected on the floor. Recordings from our Wysing residency were edited into a 30-minute surround sound audio mix that was played through an 8.2 PA system.&#38;nbsp;

The result is like a exhibition for a show that hasn’t yet happened.&#38;nbsp;

Free to Choose is an operatic financial sci-fi (fi-fi) narrated by no other than Milton Friedman: The American economist who was the real-life narrator of Hong Kong’s founding myth. In his long career as a neoliberal ideologue and advisor to the conservative governments of the US and the UK, Friedman hailed Hong Kong as “the modern exemplar of free markets” needless of heavy-handed government planning. “If you want to see Capitalism in action, you should go to Hong Kong.” Neoliberalism, as a theory invented in the west, once tested in Hong Kong’s advanced colony, would return to shape the economic policies of Western powers in the decades to come.&#38;nbsp;

DOG LUCK (2025 –) is a format-fluid project by composer/performer James Oldham and writer/artist Glynnis Eldridge, which began in 2025. Beginning with the simple consideration of ‘how lucky it is to be a dog’, DOG LUCK observes and muses upon human relationships with dogs and the reletionship between dog and nature. The project has been realised in different iterations:

Iteration 1In a performance on 1 October 2025, Glynnis Eldridge compiled every mention of dogs in her notes app and read selected passages to a live audience at the Radio Killed the Video Star fundraiser for Resonance FM at Spanners, London. The text is approximately 20 pages long and Eldridge’s reading lasted approximately 10 minutes.

Iteration 2James Oldham then selected the most musical phrases from the text, dividing them into four categories (cosmonaut, fashion accessory, good boy, and the un-wolf) and set the lines as a four-part round for Waste Paper Opera Chorus. The duo paired the learning of the round with a timed writing exercise under the three prompts. This workshop was delivered across two sessions in October 2025.

Research Engineers is a songwriting and performance duo with Anat Ben-David. We are working towards a debut album and we regularly perform live.&#38;nbsp;The duo began this project in the studio with a process of improvised back and forth layering to build songs in single sessions. Then the songs are rehearsed and performed live, sometimes with live instruments and sometimes with video.&#38;nbsp;Below is a video from Iklectik in 2026, comprising clips from different songs and improvisations.&#38;nbsp;

Natacha Diels, Eleanor Westbrook and James Oldham brought together new music, gesture, humour and a general revelling in the mundane with their UK &#38;amp; Ireland tour “At a Safe Distance”. Each gig on the tour was shared with different guest artists.
Eleanor and James returned to a piece of theirs from 2019, which was originally created for Syrup Tracing; or on the significance of rising and/or falling by Waste Paper Opera. Following two “humans” as they depart from their pedestrian lives to go to the moon. Using found sound, patchworked movement sequences, unexpected rhythms and fragmented song they build a strange and uncanny performative universe. Natacha presented a new set called Am I Alive, for theremin-driven snare drum, dismembered metronomes, and perpetually accumulating nonsense phrases that gradually coalesce into crystalline sense. Half-remembered conversations with machine friends form the work’s text, constructing elaborate stories built of the forever narrowing gap between life and function. The piece flickers between intimacy and circuitry, drone and chaos, beauty and dissonance.The show also includes a barista sequence by James Oldham and clown improvisation by Eleanor Westbrook.

[composer/filmmaker]Commissioned by Riot Ensemble during the 2020 lockdown. This piece began as a flute solo to be recorded by Kate Walter from her home. With a perceived lack of imagination in the presentation of works during lockdown, I decided to make a film with the flute composition as a starting point.&#38;nbsp;

Here are some things that I knew I wanted to do:&#38;nbsp;
Use an A B structure, where the work comprises two apparently contrasted sections.&#38;nbsp;

Use objects in my house to make a world that didn’t already exist in my house.

Ask my cousin Tom Goodwin to be in the film. He is a medieval LARPer who owns his own armour and weapons.&#38;nbsp;

Have some kind of imagery that engages with the grotesque.&#38;nbsp;
